Summary: A Fragment

A FRAGMENT
Central Idea:
This poem has been written by “H.W. Longfellow.” He is famous for his motivational poems. This is also one of his motivational poems. In this poem the poet is motivating the people to wake up from slumber and work hard for the success of their country and nation.
Summary:
This is a tiny beautiful poem with a beautiful language, written by “Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.” The poet is asking us to get up from slumber. He has used a very impressive language such as;
            “Awake! Arise! The hour is late!
  Angels are knocking at the door!
  They are in haste and cannot wait.
  And once departed come no more.”
The poet is of the view that if we will sleep till late in the morning then we will lose our precious time. So we should get up immediately and welcome the angels because they are knocking at the door and they are in haste and can’t wait for us. If we will keep on sleeping, the angels will leave our doorstep and they will never come back.

In the next and the last stanza, the poet says that if we will continue to sleep till late we will lose our strengths. He gives an example of an athlete whose arms lose strength due to taking long rest. And once he loses strength, he becomes just like a barren land which produces nothing except weeds.
So there is a message in this poem for all of us that we should not make angels of success wait at our doorstep. Instead we should welcome them by getting up and starting hard work. We should not be like barren land that does not produce anything except weeds. And we should do something proud for our country.
